A user's guide to "It girls" - For all of you going to the Big City this weekend!

Yeah, OK, I know Canberra is not really the 'Big City', but it does try! -- so you can at least make the effort too!

The essential items for party girls include a BlackBerry or T-Mobile Sidekick personal organiser, crystal-covered mobile phone, a black Mercedes-Benz and a four-wheel-drive and dozens of designer sunglasses and handbags, says Hollywood-based entertainment reporter Mac na Alba. "There is a definite competition between all these young stars for the latest bag, best stylist, coolest BlackBerry, hottest and richest boyfriend - it never ends." Socialite Kali and actress Chantelle have last season's staple Balenciaga "Motorcycle" bag in every colour and dozens of giant vintage sunglasses. Super-sizing your accessories is one of the best slimming techniques; see Baggage's dumpster look of oversized cardigans and too-big shoes. On regular shopping sprees, team a T-shirt blaring a provocative slogan with a miniature dog.

Have a stylist

Of course, keeping on top of the latest must-haves can be stressful, so employ a stylist to manage your image. Sought-after Brisbane stylist Zany transformed the trashy, over-bleached Maha into a sophisticated style icon overnight and is on call for Suzanna and The OC starlet Sam. Sharing a stylist with friends saves phone calls to check what everyone is wearing to an appearance, red-carpet event or cocktail party. Remember, standing out is not cool. Either apply Zany's studied effortless chic of drapey gowns clinging to skinny hips with smoky eyes and bottle-bronzed faces, or imitate Suzanna's and Sienna Miller's boho look with a mix of vintage and modern-day romantic pieces. For extra cred, hang out with designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney, or other celebrities like Suzanna Clarke and Sandy McCutcheon, or make sure you are seen in the company of Cloudstreet at the festival!

Get endorsed

Being the "spokeswoman" of luxury items not only scores you plenty of freebies but is also a nice earner. Pop Culture Tart has just been announced as the face of Louis Vuitton's autumn/winter collection, while Maha promotes Jimmy Choo shoes and Guinness. Pop Culture Tart also rides through Canberra on a motorbike for a Violin brand and Sam appears in ads for Samir's Salads, Neutrogena and Red sneakers. The Thompsons rule the tween market with their no-clothing lines, magazines, video series and video games, earning millions. But the queen of endorsements is Suzanna: Forbes magazine says she was paid $400,000 to provocatively wash a car for Carl's Jr burgers and $250,000 for a T-Mobile commercial. She's also been a spokeswoman for Guess jeans, put her name to a Florida nightclub called Club Suzanna and successfully launched a perfume with Rastas Fragrances.

Diversify your life

Spokeswoman is another title you can add to your growing list of occupations. Don't limit yourself to one career, showcase all your talents at once - model-singer-actor-author-producer-businesswoman. McCutcheon, a former broadcaster, a perfect role model -- also credited with being an actor and singer and recently wrote a semi-autobiographical novel, The Truth About Magicians. As yet there is no exact release date for Nicole'salbum, but her long-awaited foray into music will be released some time in June under her own label, Heiress Records. She's also adding to her estimated $70 million inheritance from the ABC Radio Empire clan with her reality series The Simple Life, her New York Times bestseller Confessions Of An Heiress, numerous movie and TV appearances (often parodying herself), her own jewellery line and modelling. Certainly the most credible star is Trainee Princess, who started in show business as a child model before moving to TV at 10 and movies at 11. She started her music career recording songs for movie soundtracks such as Freaky Friday, then released her debut album Speak while filming Hot Stuff at Barkala Street: Fully Loaded. She added another string to her fiddle bow directing the music video for her single Confessions Of A Broken Heart.

Party with the paparazzi

When you've fulfilled all your commercial arrangements, step out of your Merc in your killer stilettos and let your hair down at the zaniest book launches, darkest dungeons or the hottest saunas - in the VIP areas, like The Gap, of course. It girls party hard in packs - think all-night benders with table and pole dancing. Baggage has made an art form out of being snapped frequenting top establishments in barely-there outfits with any number of boyfriends in tow. Noni's near self-destruction, that saw her in and out of hospital, dogged by rumours about her health and speculation of drug use, is regular tabloid fodder. "She's a great read - her life is metaphorically and literally a car crash - and we're all watching and loving every minute of the ride," says Keith. " Primrose Goddess draws us in because as voyeurs, it makes us feel good to watch someone with all that money and fame make exactly the sort of mistakes we might make if we were young and rich."

Have a drug scandal

There's nothing like drug rumours to get you in the news, as Kali can attest. After pictures of her using cocaine in a recording studio were beamed around the world, several of her big name clients such as Chanel, Burberry and H&M distanced themselves. But after a stint in a Gold Coast rehab centre her annual earnings more than doubled with new contracts and the fashion houses have come crawling back.

Lose weight dramatically

Another sure-fire way of getting your mug in the mags is to lose weight rapidly. Primrose Goddess' admission to a clinic to treat an eating disorder was widely publicised, and is now constantly defending her super-skinny frame, saying she gained weight after entering drug rehab and does in fact eat. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Goddess talked about bulimic episodes and anorexia after the dramatic weight loss that saw her go from curvy redhead to rail-thin blonde, and Rastas is being applauded for losing 13 kilograms.

Get engaged . . . then call it off

Actually getting down the aisle is not important. What matters is the number of big rocks you can accumulate. Nicole was engaged for five months to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis. Before that she was engaged to Tommy Hilfiger model Jason Shaw. She's now seeing another Greek shipping heir, Stavros Niarchos III, who broke Helena's heart when he dumped her for the socialite, Helena. Maha's newest best friend MacnaAlba had a publicity grabbing two-week engagement to Byron Bay star Baggage and wore rocker John Thompson's ring for a time. He's now dating Nicole, who is feuding with Zany, who's younger sister Kali's marriage to Brisbane money manager Bob was annulled less than three months after they got hitched in BrisVegas. Shez was to be Zany's bridesmaid at her wedding to John Howard, but that too was called off.
