Pronouncing "SAUNA"!

HOT ISSUE No. 1 — The Sauna bathers should check a dictionary before telling others to ‘say it right.’ According to Webster’s Dictionary there are two pronunciations for sauna: so’ne and sou’na. Who’s the hillbilly, now?”

---

HOT ISSUE No. 2 — “In the Tuesday, Dec. 5, Sound Off, der is someone criticizing da way some of us speak in Delta County. Dey even go so far as to worry dat da rest of the world may say we talk like the hill folks in West Virginia and Kentucky. Dey say, that sauna is being mispronounced. Dey say dat it should be pronounced as ‘saw-na.’ Holy wah, eh! I’ve got to go quick and tell uncle Toivo from Finland dat he is all wrong and not to pronounce sauna as ‘sow-o-na.’ Der is someone who probably is a Troll from da flatlands who say we talk wrong. Dey don’t know dat in most Finnish spelling, all letters are pronounced.”

HOT ISSUE No. 3 — “Replying to ‘Say It Right.’ Guess what? Saunas were first initiated to the United States when the Finnish settlers came to America many years ago. The great and invigorating steam bath came straight from the old country of Finland. In the Finnish language, every letter in a word is pronounced, only some words sound like several letters are together. That is why sauna is pronounced correctly as sow-na. So, if you want to be really correct, you can say ‘soowna,’ not saw-na. Every time I hear someone say sawna, I cringe because I know it is wrong. And, for the word smelt pronounced sometimes as shmelt, well, my good Finnish friend says that comes from the German communities like Cheyboygan, Wis., German, old country language adds in the h.”

HOT ISSUE No. 4 — “Check your dictionary before you criticize. It is pronounced both ways. Sauna is a Finnish word. Ask any Finn, it’s pronounced sou-nuh. /saw-nuh/.”

---

HOT ISSUE No. 5 — “The word sauna is correctly pronounced ‘sow-na,’ just as all of us Yoopers prefer to say it. The word sauna is Finnish in origin. It is directly taken out of the Finnish language, therefore, it is not restricted to the pronunciation guidelines of the English language. The ‘saw-na’ pronunciation that the Sound Off author prefers is the Americanized version of the word. He wishes us to have more culture? Then my argument is that those of us who say ‘sow-na’ are more cultured than our counterparts who use the Americanized ‘saw-na.’”

HOT ISSUE No. 6 — “There was a suggestion in the Sound Off section in which the writer made reference to the pronunciation of the word sauna. Being a Finlander, I decided to research this myself. I checked on Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary (www.m-w.com/dictionary/sauna) and found that there are two proper pronunciations for the word sauna. One sounding like saw-na and the other sow-na. You can even hear an audio of both ways. Being Finnish, I use the pronunciation sow-na and will continue to do so. Now, when I am corrected and told it is saw-na, I can say both are correct.”
