Sunday Sauna -_March 1 2009

This Sunday we remember that back in 1692, Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and Tituba (no, I didn't make it up), were brought before local magistrates in Salem Village, Massachusetts, beginning what would become known as the Salem witch trials.

It is also Welsh St David's day.

However, this week we celebrate Iceland's greatest contribution to humanity

Iceland's Beer Day

This day, March 1st in 1989, marked the end of beer prohibition.

The first Beer Day, Ölstofan bar owner Kormákur Geirharðsson recalls:
I remember a lot of drinking and a lot of pissing all night long and the next days, and it [was] not stopping. This was the day Icelanders took the step to try to become civilized. Ölstofan was not open then, but the idea of owning a bar started there.”
The Reykjavik Grapevine
A great moment in Icelandic history

Following the end of prohibition, Icelanders have celebrated every Beer Day by imbibing the drink in various bars, restaurants, and clubs. Those located in Reykjavik, the capital and largest city in Iceland, are especially wild on Beer Day; a “runtur” (bar crawl) is a popular way of getting to know the various bars and beers in this city, many being open until 4:00 a.m. the next day. The legalization of beer remains a cultural milestone in Iceland and a major seismic shift in the nation’s alcoholic beverage preference, as beer has today become the most popular alcoholic beverage of choice.

The Icelanders are all slightly potty for not only do they have "Beer Day" but they also have Bolludagur or "Buns Day" and Sprengidagur or " Bursting Day" - we believe both have something to do with large cup sizes... bra cups, that is.

The celebration of Beer Day in Iceland has inspired a similar event in the U.S., known as Iceland Beer Day, or IBD. No word yet on plans to make March 2nd Iceland's National Aspirin or Hangover Day. Click here for more details.
