Sauna is on this weekend (Sunday 4 December) in celebration of the return of the delightful Suzanna.

We are so far:

Here's the latest for Sunday.

The list has blown out a little this week so please bear in mind our expanded numbers (17!!!!) when preparing your contribution.

Sam is co-ordinating our mains and so communicating with her is a high priority for anyone bringing food.

Here we go:

We could probably use another tapas dish or more wine (usually). There are beers in the fridge that need drinking too.

Not all Saunas are Equal !

Once in a while you stumble upon a sauna that is so different that it is worth taking note of. The one we discovered in Amsterdam is called Sauna Deco and is the most luxurious sauna we have ever seen.

In fact there are two saunas and a Turkish steam room inside - one sauna is really hot and the other "family friendly". What is great is not just the décor, which is all authentic deco, but the fact it is a mixed sauna and the Dutch are very at home with their bodies! While there are a lot of gay saunas in Amsterdam, this one is not a pick-up place, but a sensual experience of another kind.

Herengracht

Situated on the Herengracht (canal), it is in a fabulous area and was just around the corner from our houseboat. Because they only let in a certain number of people at one time, it is never crowded and felt very friendly. The relaxation areas are huge

the chill-out areas were amazingly beautiful

People in the hot sauna were friendly and welcoming. And in the chill-out rooms you could get tea, coffee, snacks and cold drinks. No beer though. However, having been nibbling on "space-cake", beer was not on our agenda.

The cold plunge pool was quite small, but cool enough. To the right of it was another room where you could simply sit and soak your feet in hot or cold water, while the rest of you cooled down. Lovely!

And for the horticulturists among us, there are shops everywhere with more than just tulips...

A difficult choice is to be made.

Picking the mid-week date as our marker, our first option is to use this week's sauna to acknowledge the Southern hemisphere's Autumnal Equinox, and the festivals of the fruit and wine harvests. We might choose to mark this occasion by theming our dinner with fruits and fine wines.

Alternatively, mid-week is the feast of St Turibius of Mongrovejo, one of Spain's jolliest inquisitors. "Time is not our own, and we must give a strict account of it", he once jested. We could perhaps mark his feast-day by tying each other up and timing how long our escapes take. Or a vigorous game of "Truth or Dare" after a light supper of bread and water.

Then again, we may choose to combine the most appealing aspects of each of these celebrations.

There will also be a sauna.

Farewell Party Saturday February 26

Hi Saunarinos,

We have about 30 guests coming to our farewell party this Saturday night, starting at 7pm. You are, of course, invited. If you haven't already told us you are coming, please let us know.

I am making three dips and two main dishes for a Moroccan feast, served buffet style.

I would be incredibly grateful if other people could volunteer to make one of the following salads or a sweet.

If you would like to help out, please email me asap and I will send you the recipe. (They are fairly simple to make, but delicious.)

Sauna Sunday ~ Lupercalia !

LUPERCALIA ~ ONCE AGAIN !

The Coven will gather at 6.30 for the beginning of Lupercalia. Check our Coven Website for updates

Lupercalia was a very ancient, possibly pre-Roman pastoral festival, observed on February 13 through 15 to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Lupercalia subsumed Februa, a possibly earlier-origin spring cleansing ritual held on the same date, which gives the month of February its name.

The Lupercalia was believed in antiquity to have some connection with the Ancient Greek festival of the Arcadian Lykaia (from Ancient Greek: λύκος — lykos, "wolf", Latin lupus) and the worship of Lycaean Pan, the Greek equivalent to Faunus.

THE FEAST: Sam says" I will make a variety of salads for mains (1. chicken coleslaw, 2. tomato, bean & avocado and 3. balsamic Mediterranean green salad). The salads are all gluten, mayo and onion free."

Figs Poached in Syrup Recipe

1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups water
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp vanilla extract
12 large or 18 small ripe figs (peeled if preferred)
100ml of Cognac or Cointreau

Put sugar, water, lemon juice and vanilla in a large saucepan and heat gently until sugar is dissolved. Add figs and cover. Simmer for 5 minutes until figs are tender, then allow to cool in the syrup. Arrange figs and the syrup on individual plates and drizzle each fig with 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of Cognac or Cointreau.

This worked really well as a dessert served with a slice of the Rose Geranium Cake.

Rose Geranium Cake Recipe

180g of self-raising flour
3 large eggs
180g melted butter
180g caster sugar
30ml brandy
4 or 5 rose geranium leaves, torn apart loosely

(You can substitute cider brandy and apple geranium leaves for an apple geranium cake instead)

Sift the flour into a bowl and mix in the eggs with a wooden spoon, then add the butter, sugar and brandy. Once the mixture has a smooth consistency, add the geranium leaves. The mixture should be relatively liquid.

Grease a medium-sized cake dish or line it with baking paper. Pour the mixture into the dish and bake it at 200C for 25-30 minutes. Let the cake cool for a while in the dish and then turn out and decorate with geranium leaves or flowers. Can be eaten either warm or cold.

December 12th is a dark day in history. It is the day, back in 1098 that First Crusade went bezerk. In the town of Massacre of Ma'arrat al-Numan Crusaders breach the town's walls and massacre about 20,000 inhabitants. After finding themselves with insufficient food, they resort to cannibalism.

A chronicler, Radulph of Caen, wrote: "Some people said that, constrained by the lack of food, they boiled pagan adults in cooking-pots, impaled children on spits and devoured them grilled."
These events were also chronicled by Fulcher of Chartres, who wrote: "I shudder to tell that many of our people, harassed by the madness of excessive hunger, cut pieces from the buttocks of the Saracens already dead there, which they cooked, but when it was not yet roasted enough by the fire, they devoured it with savage mouth." - Nice.

Lughnasadh

The Celtic harvest festival on August 1st takes its name from the Irish god Lugh, one of the chief gods of the Tuatha De Danann, giving us Lughnasadh in Ireland, Lunasdál in Scotland, and Laa Luanys in the Isle of Man. (In Wales, this time is known simply as Gwl Awst, the August Feast.)

Lugh dedicated this festival to his foster-mother, Tailtiu, the last queen of the Fir Bolg, who died from exhaustion after clearing a great forest so that the land could be cultivated. When the men of Ireland gathered at her death-bed, she told them to hold funeral games in her honor. As long as they were held, she prophesied Ireland would not be without song. Tailtiu’s name is from Old Celtic Talantiu, "The Great One of the Earth," suggesting she may originally have been a personification of the land itself, like so many Irish goddesses. In fact, Lughnasadh has an older name, Brón Trogain, which refers to the painful labor of childbirth. For at this time of year, the earth gives birth to her first fruits so that her children might live.

Tailtiu gives her name to Teltown in County Meath, where the festival was traditionally held in early Ireland. It evolved into a great tribal assembly, attended by the High King, where legal agreements were made, political problems discussed, and huge sporting contests were held on the scale of an early Olympic Games. Artists and entertainers displayed their talents, traders came from far and wide to sell food, farm animals, fine crafts and clothing, and there was much storytelling, music, and high-spirited revelry, according to a medieval eye-witness account (which sounds much like our Sunday night sauna)...:

"Trumpets, harps, hollow-throated horns, pipers, timpanists, unwearied…fiddlers, gleemen, bone-players and bag-pipers, a rude crowd, noisy, profane, roaring and shouting."

A total solar eclipse will occur on July 11, 2010. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth's view of the Sun. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible over a region thousands of miles wide.

The eclipse will be visible over much of the southern Pacific Ocean, touching several small islands including Tuamotu in French Polynesia and Easter Island, as well as the southern tips of Argentina and Chile in South America.

Naadam - Наадам !

However, we will be celebrating Naadam (Mongolian: Наадам, Classical Mongolian: Naɣadum, games) is a traditional type of festival in Mongolia. The festival is also locally termed "eriin gurvan naadam" (эрийн гурван наадам) "the three games of men". The games are Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery and are held throughout the country during the midsummer holidays. Women have started participating in the archery and girls in the horse-racing games, but not in Mongolian wrestling.

"Meatballs for the Convent" Recipe

Meatballs:
500g steak, chopped or minced
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped pancetta
1 or 2 cloves garlic
salt, pepper, coriander seeds - 1 teaspoon of each
sage, basil, rosemary chopped finely - 1 heaped teaspoon of each
oil for frying
flour for dredging

Sauce:
1 tablespoon bitter orange juice (seville or marmalade oranges - lemon juice is the best substitute if you can't get bitter oranges)
1/2 cup beef stock

Pound all the ingredients together and form into little balls the size of walnuts, roll in flour and fry in oil. When nicely browned add stock and bitter orange juice. Simmer until all the liquid is absorbed.

Beet Salad Recipe

Serves 4 - 6

6 red or golden beetroot, peeled
Green tops from the beetroot
1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
2 firm ripe avocados

Dressing:
1 tbs white wine vinegar
1 small leek finely sliced
1 tbs lemon juice
Juice from one small mandarin
Pinch of caster sugar
3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Very thinly slice beetroot and douse with the red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Cover and leave to marinate for at least 10 minutes.

For the dressing combine the vinegar, leek, lemon juice, mandarin juice and a pinch of sugar in a bowl, then set aside to macerate for 15 minutes. Then whisk oil into the vinegar mixture, season with salt & pepper.

Drain beetroot of any excess vinegar, then rinse in cold water. Arrange greens on a plate, then top with slice beetroot and thinly sliced avocado and drizzle with dressing.

Sauna Sunday - June 27 -Siebenschläfertag !

Siebenschläfertag

June 27 is Siebenschläfertag (Seven Sleepers Day). If it rains that day, the next seven weeks or the rest of summer is supposedly going to be rainy. While it might seem to refer to the Siebenschläfer rodent (Glis Glis see below), "edible dormouse" in English, it actually commemorates the Seven Sleepers legend. Objections have been raised that the legend might have arisen before the Gregorian reform and as at this time the difference to the Julian calendar amounted to ten days, July 7 would be the actual Seven Sleepers Day. So while you are working that out and the dormouse pie is baking, - lets get naked and have a sauna!

The edible dormouse or fat dormouse (Glis glis) is a small dormouse and the only species in the genus Glis.
It was farmed and eaten by the ancient Romans (usually as a snack), hence the word edible in its name. The dormice were kept and raised either in large pits or (in less spacious urban surroundings) in terra cotta containers, the gliraria, something like contemporary hamster cages.

To this day, wild edible dormice are consumed in Slovenia, where they are considered a rare delicacy and dormouse trapping an ethnic tradition. Use of dormice for food and fur and of dormouse fat as a medicament is documented there since the 13th century. Seasonal dormice feasts were welcome protein supplements for the impoverished peasantry.

The edible dormouse lives in continental Europe. It was accidentally introduced to the town of Tring in England through an escape from Lionel Walter Rothschild's private collection in 1902. As a result, the British edible dormouse population, now 10,000 strong, is concentrated in a 200-square-mile (520 km2) triangle between Beaconsfield, Aylesbury and Luton. Though this animal is regarded as a pest by some, in the United Kingdom the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 prohibits certain methods of killing and taking it, and removing them may require a licence.

In Roman mythology, Lupercus is a god sometimes identified with the Roman god Faunus, who is the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Pan. Lupercus is the god of shepherds. His festival, celebrated on the anniversary of the founding of his temple on February 15, was called the Lupercalia. His priests wore goatskins. The second-century Christian apologist Justin Martyr mentions an image of "the Lycaean god, whom the Greeks call Pan and the Romans Lupercus," nude save for the girdle of goatskin, which stood in the Lupercal, the cave where Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she-wolf. There, on the Ides of February, a goat and a dog were sacrificed, and salt mealcakes prepared by the Vestal Virgins were burnt.

February 7th, 1497 a wicked event took place in the Italian city of Florence. Supporters of Girolamo Savonarola burnt thousands of objects like cosmetics, art, and books in Florence, Italy.The event became known as.. the bonfire of the vanities.

Sauna Sunday January 17 Sielulintu Night!

A sauna to celebrate Sielulintu.

For the Finns, the world was believed to have been formed out of a waterfowl's egg exploding. The sky was believed to be the upper cover of the egg, alternately it was seen as a tent, which was supported by a column at the north pole, below the north star.

The movement of the stars was explained to be caused by the sky-dome's rotation around the North Star and itself. A great whirl was caused at the north pole by the rotation of column of sky. Through this whirl souls could go to the outside of the world to the land of dead, Tuonela.

Earth was believed to be flat. At the edges of Earth was Lintukoto, "the home of the birds", a warm region in which birds lived during the winter. The Milky Way is called Linnunrata, "the path of the birds", because the birds were believed to move along it to Lintukoto and back.

Birds had also other significance. Birds brought a human's soul to him at the moment of birth, and took it away at the moment of death. In some areas, it was necessary to have a wooden bird-figure nearby to prevent the soul from escaping during sleep. This Sielulintu, "the soul-bird", protected the soul from being lost in the paths of dreams.

Sauna Club "Meditrinalia" Sunday October 11

Yep, we are celebrating all things Meditrinalia.... The Meditrinalia was an obscure festival celebrated on October 11 in honor of the new vintage, which was offered in libations to the gods for the first time each year.

Little information about the Meditrinalia survived from early Roman religion, although the tradition itself did. It was known to be somehow connected to Jupiter and to have been an important ceremony in early agricultural Rome, but beyond that, only speculation exists.

Meditrina was a Roman goddess who seems to have been a late Roman invention to account for the origin of Meditrinalia. The earliest account of associating the Meditrinalia with such a goddess was by 2nd century grammarian Sextus Pompeius Festus, on the basis of which she is asserted by modern sources to be the Roman goddess of health, longevity and wine, with an etymological meaning of "healer" suggested by some. Anyway... we are going to party. **PLEASE NOTE. As S & S are away until 4pm on Sunday they will be unable to contribute food this week.

The 13th of September is the day in 1165 that Ghenghis Khan (Temüjin) had his first sauna, he was only four years old. Now, we will admit it was more like a sweat lodge in a yurt. But we are not getting into a debate over technicalities. We will raise a tumbler to his memory and chanting his mantra. "We Khan do!"

The Sunday Sauna was huge. Thankfully the main course (a superb pork and roast spuds by Madam Baggage) was amply supported by a variety of vegetable and salad dishes. Pop Culture Tart provided a wicked apple tart.

The wines and ales were flowing and to round off the night, half of Sunas, Saint Paul and Saintly Sister Sarah, performed songs and tunes to the delight of the sensually satiated sauna coven.

Despite their jet lag, CoCo Loco from the UK arrived and melted into the general madness with superb ease. We hope they will return again.

This week's sauna commemorates the tragic Pagan loss in the the Battle of the Frigidus, (also called the Battle of the Frigid River,) was fought between September 5–6 394, between the army of the Eastern Emperor Theodosius I and the army of Western Roman ruler Eugenius.

The unfortunate defeat of Eugenius and his commander, the Frankish magister militum Arbogast, (you have gotta luv a bloke with the name Arboghast) put the whole empire back in the hands of a single emperor for the last time in Roman history. Most significantly, the battle was the last attempt to contest the Christianization of the empire; its outcome decided the fate of Christianity in the western Empire.

Sex and the Medina?

It is hard to imagine a more peculiar pairing than the light and fluffy American TV series Sex in the City and the Kingdom of Morocco. Even harder to imagine why such a notion would come to mind. But read on and be ...er... surprised?

Well this month the sequel to Sex and the City ( the movie) is being filmed and rumour has it that as much as five weeks of the sequel's production time will be spent in Morocco. Which cast members will be part of the Morocco shoot, or why they're going there, remains a mystery.

It is also a mystery as to where in Morocco such a shoot might take place. Fez? Mmm - seems doubtful. However the hedonistic folk in Marrakech may well be able to provide just the right ambiance. The View from Fez will be happy to publish any tips, hints, sightings and (of course) your paparazzi shots!

Are they really heading to Morocco?

Speculation is rife. Katey Rich writing for the website Cinema blend.com says...

"There are some obvious explanations for what would bring the shoot to Morocco - Carrie and Big take a honeymoon there, or someone wants to adopt a kid and Morocco stands in for a war-torn African country. But while we're speculating, why not have some fun with it? Maybe someone mistakes Carrie for a legitimate journalist and sends her to cover something in a war zone. Morocco has stood in for the Middle East multiple times, like Body of Lies and Babel. Or maybe Miranda, in a fit of do-gooder-ism, goes to offer legal services to oppressed minorities or women, or Doctors Without Borders, for all I know. Or maybe Samantha moves her PR business to Dubai! Anything is possible!"

Sex and the City started life as an American cable television series, broadcast on HBO from 1998 until 2004, for a total of six seasons.

Set in New York City, the show focused on four women, three in their mid-thirties and one in her forties. The quirky drama/comedy had multiple continuing story lines and tackled socially relevant issues such as sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex, and promiscuity. It specifically examined the lives of big-city professional women in the late 1990s and how changing roles and expectations for women affected the characters.

Next came Sex and the City - the movie. The film première was in London's Leicester Square on May 28, and May 30, 2008 in the US with an unprecedented $55.7 million three-day gross. The début made Sex and the City the top-opening R-rated romantic comedy of all time.
