Pick your celebration this week.

A difficult choice is to be made.

Picking the mid-week date as our marker, our first option is to use this week's sauna to acknowledge the Southern hemisphere's Autumnal Equinox, and the festivals of the fruit and wine harvests. We might choose to mark this occasion by theming our dinner with fruits and fine wines.

Alternatively, mid-week is the feast of St Turibius of Mongrovejo, one of Spain's jolliest inquisitors. "Time is not our own, and we must give a strict account of it", he once jested. We could perhaps mark his feast-day by tying each other up and timing how long our escapes take. Or a vigorous game of "Truth or Dare" after a light supper of bread and water.

Then again, we may choose to combine the most appealing aspects of each of these celebrations.

There will also be a sauna.

Choose your role for the evening:

Mains: Noni & Rastas (Thai-style, Penang Chicken curry)

Sides: John (rice, steamed bok-choy), Keith

Drinks: Baggage, Shez

Puddings: Kali

Kitchen slaves: Jeff, Nic (Shez' friend)

Possible late-comers: Christine J, Emma

Away: Samir, Zany, Mirri, Nicoleena

A gold coin donation is being sought from all sauna attendees to contribute to the pool and sauna components of the power bill.

RSVP by Friday if possible, please.

An Absence of Steam

Nic and John will be out of town this weekend due to the Maleny-based, few-days-late celebration of St Patrick's Day and the urgent requirement for musicians to return to the Finbar's fold.

Accordingly, there will be no steamy gathering.

(But you're welcome to come to Finbar's from noon)

The Flower of Scotland

The celebrations continue with this week's sauna being held on the birthday of the Keith. Wear a kilt and speak of Scottish things.

Choose your role for the evening (collaboration is cool)

Mains: Emma (fish-cakes), Helena ("Thai feast")

Sides: Fi

Drinks: John, Keith

Puddings: Baggage

Kitchen slaves: Sophie, Sam

Away: Samir, Zany, Mirri

A gold coin donation is being sought from all sauna attendees to contribute to the pool and sauna components of the power bill.

RSVP by Friday if possible, please.

A Double-Birthday Sauna - 6 March 2011

Transformation is the theme this week, with new Barkala-dwellers and a double birthday. Sunday is the anniversary of the birth of both Bec and Emma. Tomfoolery will ensue.

Mains: John and Nic - Thai-style Chicken Rice (steamed chicken, rice, chicken soup, spicy accompanying sauce to taste)

Sides; Keith (asian greens a-plenty)

Drinks: Holly, Chris & Graham

Puddings: Bec

Kitchen slaves: Tony

Self-catering: Emma (and possibly Jeff)

Away: Samir, Zany, Mirri

Please note that our "in attendance" category has been removed to encourage saunaroonies to nominate their chosen contribution.

And.... in view of the relatively impoverished nature of the new tenants at Casa Del Steamy, a gold coin donation is being sought from all sauna attendees to contribute to the pool and sauna components of the power bill.

See you Sunday,

John

Hi Saunarinos,

We have about 30 guests coming to our farewell party this Saturday night, starting at 7pm. You are, of course, invited. If you haven't already told us you are coming, please let us know.

I am making three dips and two main dishes for a Moroccan feast, served buffet style.

I would be incredibly grateful if other people could volunteer to make one of the following salads or a sweet.

If you would like to help out, please email me asap and I will send you the recipe. (They are fairly simple to make, but delicious.)

Zany xxx

1) Tomato and capsicum salad

2) Warm potato salad

3) Minted carrot salad

4) Chickpea and spinach salad

5) Some kind of tart or cake that can be eaten using fingers.

Sauna Sunday ~ Lupercalia !

LUPERCALIA ~ ONCE AGAIN !

The Coven will gather at 6.30 for the beginning of Lupercalia. Check our Coven Website for updates

Lupercalia was a very ancient, possibly pre-Roman pastoral festival, observed on February 13 through 15 to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Lupercalia subsumed Februa, a possibly earlier-origin spring cleansing ritual held on the same date, which gives the month of February its name.

The Lupercalia was believed in antiquity to have some connection with the Ancient Greek festival of the Arcadian Lykaia (from Ancient Greek: λύκος — lykos, "wolf", Latin lupus) and the worship of Lycaean Pan, the Greek equivalent to Faunus.

THE COVEN: Samir, Mirri, Sam, Kali, Baggage, Mac nan Alba, Bec..

THE FEAST: Sam says" I will make a variety of salads for mains (1. chicken coleslaw, 2. tomato, bean & avocado and 3. balsamic Mediterranean green salad). If there are a large number of people and this doesn’t look like enough then I will conspire with someone (any volunteers most welcome) and BBQ some meats as well. The salads are all gluten, mayo and onion free."

THE SIDES: Lamb korma kebab bits

THE PUDDING: Pudding Queen Kali makes a welcome return

THE DRINKS: mac nan alba

Figs Poached in Syrup Recipe

1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups water
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp vanilla extract
12 large or 18 small ripe figs (peeled if preferred)
100ml of Cognac or Cointreau

Put sugar, water, lemon juice and vanilla in a large saucepan and heat gently until sugar is dissolved. Add figs and cover. Simmer for 5 minutes until figs are tender, then allow to cool in the syrup. Arrange figs and the syrup on individual plates and drizzle each fig with 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of Cognac or Cointreau.

This worked really well as a dessert served with a slice of the Rose Geranium Cake.
